On May 5, 2010, Sardasht was abducted in broad daylight outside Salahaddin University in Erbil. Two days later, his body was found in Mosul, bearing two gunshot wounds to the head. His only crime was exposing corruption and nepotism within the Kurdistan Regional Government, particularly criticizing the Barzani family and the ruling parties, the KDP and PUK ‏
Despite widespread condemnation, no one has been held accountable for his murder. Investigations have been marred by inconsistencies and a lack of transparency, leading to credible allegations of involvement by Kurdish authorities .
